NEWBURYPORT — Since its creation 12 years ago, the MAScores.com website has dramatically increased in popularity.
Today, the site is known in this region as simply CALScores, and it serves as a informational hub for Cape Ann League and Northeastern Conference high school teams and their fans.
The website was created by Chris Lamothe, who is a former Newburyport, Amesbury and Manchester Essex coach, physical education teacher and the site’s lone employee.
“I grew up in Newburyport, and I live in Manchester, Mass., now,” Lamothe said. “I played football, basketball and baseball for Newburyport before coming back to coach as an assistant coach for Amesbury and Newburyport. I then became the varsity baseball coach at Manchester Essex for eight years.”
While something that has sparked a new passion and career change, the website is also something that unexpectedly fell in his lap.
“It started when I was coaching at Manchester Essex,” Lamothe said. “I was the representative for the papers, a job I was elected to because I was the newest coach in the league. Coaches sent me stats and records and I would send them to the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. I did it all online in spreadsheets and told coaches that if they sent me their scores, I would update them on a daily basis.”
From there, the idea spread and quickly grew.
“The softball coach at Manchester Essex said it was a cool thing that I was doing and asked if I could do it for softball as well. From there, it grew to all of the spring sports and I thought I would build it even bigger and have it include the whole year. It was more of a passion project than any kind of revenue-generating one.”
As the size of the site increased, so too did Lamothe’s understanding of computer programming.
