Player of the Week: Triton golfer Jon Seward

BYFIELD — For the ninth time in 13 matches, Jon Seward had at least a share of the top score for the Triton golf team yesterday.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that Triton currently sits atop the Cape Ann League Division 1 standings with a record of 11-2 (8-1 CAL).

Seward has been playing varsity golf for Triton since he was an eighth-grader. Last year, he became the first sophomore captain in Rich Dube’s eight seasons as coach. This season, Seward is averaging 30.0 quota points per round — good for an average score of 3-over par.

“When he started with us as an eighth-grader, he was in the middle of the pack,” Dube said. “He worked his way up to our No. 1 golfer last year. He was elected captain, so that’s what the kids think of him and his leadership ability.”

Seward, this week’s Daily News Player of the Week, scored 28 points yesterday in his team’s 160-95 victory over Rockport. “He really works at his game,” Dube said. “He’s obviously gifted and talented, but he really works to make himself better.”

Seward caught up with The Daily News yesterday after his round at Ould Newbury Golf Course.

What are your expectations this season after leading the team to a Division 3 North title last year?

“The team has high expectations, and I have high expectations for myself too. I felt a lot of pressure in the beginning of the season. After a couple of matches, I settled in and started scoring better.”

What were your scores like in the beginning of the season?

“I had 27 points in the first match, 21 in the second, and 27 in the third.”

Did you play a lot of golf this summer to get ready for the season?

“I played four days a week at Essex Country Club in Manchester By the Sea. I played in the Mass. Junior Amateur Championships, and I came in the top 10. I did well.”
