Phillips Exeter 10, Governor’s Academy 5
The Phillips Exeter Varsity A team beat the Governor’s Academy 10 sets to 5 in a preseason matchup earlier this week.
The Governors won at No. 2 singles and at No. 1 doubles, with freshman Lily Everett (Nassau, Bahamas) beating junior Dana Tung 6-0, 6-2. Everett and sophomore Amanda Mohan (Gloucester) teamed to defeat Exeter’s No. 1 team of Tung and Taylor Jean Jacques in a single pro set match, 8-1.
The Governors and Exeter split sets at No. 3 and at No. 5 singles. At No. 3, Governor’s sophomore Gwen Everett (Nassau, Bahamas) won the first set 6-3 and Exeter sophomore Michelle Bosche took the second set 6-1. At No. 5, Governor’s junior Katharine Gaillard (Exeter, N.H.) won the tie-breaker to take the first set 7-6 (3), and Exeter junior Helen Edwards rallied to take the second set 6-4.
In a matchup of sophomores at No. 1 singles, Exeter’s Jean Jacques bested Mohan, 6-4, 6-4. In a matchup of senior captains at No. 4 singles, Exeter’s Meagan Dashcund beat Ginny Durkin (Rye Beach, N.H.) of the Governors, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Exeter’s Melissa Yu defeated Naina Pai (North Andover), 6-2, 6-2.
Exeter won both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches by scores of 8-4.
The Governors begin their regular season on Saturday, traveling to the St. George’s School in Newport, R.I.
Triton 3, Ipswich 2
The Triton girls tennis team beat Ipswich by a score of 3-2, capturing two of the three singles matches while splitting the two doubles matches.
Kaley Towns won the first singles match 6-1, 6-2, followed by Alexa Bryant, who won a hard-fought match at second singles 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Eliza Mullen and Grace Williams won at second doubles 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the victory for the Vikings.
Triton 3, Ipswich 2
The Triton boys tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season after beating Ipswich 3-2, with the Vikings sweeping the three singles matches while losing both doubles matches.
