Triton lacrosse picks up first win of the season

---- — BYFIELD – The Triton boys lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season yesterday, beating Georgetown 10-8 in their home opener.

Leading the way for the Vikings was senior captain Larry Cuddy, who had 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists. Justin Spillane added 3 goals himself, and sophomore goaltender Nolan Smith made 18 saves.

With the win, Triton improves to 1-3 on the year, giving the team some positive momentum to build on after a difficult start to the season. Triton previously lost its opener to Wakefield 11-5 before going on to endure brutal one-goal losses at North Reading, who won 7-6, and Woburn, who won 5-4.

In each of those instances, Triton lost on a late goal in the game’s final minutes. Even after last year’s disappointing 5-13 season, fourth-year head coach Sean Parsons said he could see that his team was improving, and that it was better than its 0-3 record suggested.

Now with a win under their belts, Parsons said his goals remain the same, to be competitive and try to get back to the state tournament.

“Our expectations are that we want to be a competitive team, we want to be competitive in every game, and we don’t want to get blown out,” Parsons said. “We want to try to win the conference and try to go to the tournament.”

This year’s Vikings team will return about half of its roster from last year, including the core of its defense and attack. In addition to Cuddy and Spillane, the Vikings also return senior captain Dalton Tzitzon at midfield and bring about promising freshmen Ryan Sheedy and Liam Spillane.

But the player Parsons might be most excited about is Smith, who he said has been a rock in net so far this season and could play a huge role in how far this year’s Triton team goes.

“Smith, he’s playing out of his mind,” Parsons said. “He played great as a freshman last year and he had 22 saves the other day. He’s already got about 69 saves in four games.”

Following yesterday’s win, Triton will have the weekend off before hitting the road again to face Hamilton-Wenham on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings will then take on Saugus at home on Thursday before taking off again to face Chelmsford on the road next Saturday at 11 a.m.
