Pentucket freshman Connor Aulson looks to be star in the making

WEST NEWBURY — At first glance, Connor Aulson looks like an ordinary teenage kid. The Pentucket freshman stands at only around 5 feet tall, and between his skinny build and his braces, he isn’t someone you would normally peg as a great athlete.

Yet once Aulson steps on the tennis court, it’s clear right away that the young Sachem star is anything but ordinary.

In just a few short weeks, Aulson has established himself as not just the best player on the Pentucket boys tennis team, but one of the top players in the league. Yesterday he helped the Sachems sweep Amesbury 5-0, winning his match 6-0, 6-1 in only about 45 minutes. After the match was over, head coach Christian Langlois predicted that it will only be a matter of time before Aulson is the top player in the league.

“Over the next couple of years he’s going to be dominant,” Langlois said. “Not only in the league, but he’s going to be competing with some of the best kids in the state when it comes to the individual state tournament that comes in mid-May.”

Aulson may only have a few matches worth of experience at the high school level, but in terms of time of the court, he is by far the most experienced player the Sachems have. The Groveland resident has been playing since he was 5½ years old, spending much of that time training at the Northeast Tennis Center in Middleton.

He has also spent a fair amount of time around the Pentucket team over the past few years, training with the team as something of an unofficial practice squad member, since he wasn’t allowed to officially try out until he reached high school.

“I’ve been waiting ever since I was in seventh grade,” he said. “And of course now that I’m a freshman, the middle schoolers are allowed to try out and play for the team, so that was kind of a bummer.”
