Errors cost Amesbury in 8-2 loss to Burlington

LOWELL — Unfortunately, the tears came more easily than the runs last night, as the Amesbury Indians fell to Burlington High School 8-2 in the semifinals of the Division 2 North Softball tournament.

“It’s disappointing,” said Amesbury head coach Christopher Perry after the game. “We were hoping for better. When you lose, you always wonder.”

The third-seeded Red Devils outplayed the second-seeded Indians in the field and at bat. Burlington first-baseman Kaela Hersee began her team’s success with a two-run hit in the first. On the other hand, the Indians’ first at-bat was three up, three down.

In the bottom of the second inning, Amesbury left fielder Ashley Valme slammed the ball into deep left field, only to have it bounce off the top lip of the wall. Although it wasn’t a home run, Valme took second base and was batted in by center fielder Janine Fatal for Amesbury’s first run.

In the fourth inning, things were looking up for the Indians, when they held Burlington for the first time during the game, thanks to nice stops by shortstop Amanda Schell and pitcher Carolina Merrill.

The Indians were buzzing as they returned to the dugout.

“None of this waiting around,” shouted catcher Cassandra Schultz. “Let’s do this now.”

The Indians hit the ball more in the second half of the game, but were unable to score again until the sixth inning, when pitcher Rachael Cyr hit a double, sending third baseman Autumn Kligerman across home plate.

Throughout the game, Amesbury made a few costly mistake. Twice players were tagged out, once for running into the ball and once for running into a player from the opposing team. In the top of the seventh inning, a bobble with the ball at third base led to another run for Burlington, resulting in the final score of 8-2.
