Boyle at 100

Triton junior gunning for school record in wins

MELROSE — Mark Boyle’s wrestling season isn’t over, but it will be difficult for the Triton junior to top the weekend he just experienced.

Boyle earned his 100th career victory in the semifinals of the Division 3 North Sectional Chamionships, then went on to capture his first sectional title Saturday at Melrose. Following the tournament, Boyle was honored for his dominance with the Most Falls in the Least Time Award.

Boyle’s 100th career victory came less than two weeks after his younger brother, Luke, achieved the same feat. Luke, a sophomore, joined the Triton team as a eighth-grader, the same year Mark joined as a freshman. Both athletes were members of Triton’s state-championship team in 2010-11. Luke now has 105 career victories to Mark’s 101.

Mark has set a goal to eclipse the current program record for career victories of 145, currently held by Brandon Hayes, who graduated in 2004. He realizes his younger brother will likely raise the bar even higher before he graduates.

“It’s definitely a goal to beat the most overall wins record,” Mark Boyle said. “I know Luke is ahead of me, and he’ll surpass me when my career is over. But I hope I’m over 145, and it will be my brother and me at the top of the list.”

Mark wrestled at 135 pounds as a freshman, posting a record of 23-20. He improved throughout the season, earning a third-place finish at Division 3 North Sectionals. Last year, he was 37-9 as a sophomore at 145 pounds, earning a Cape Ann League title and a second-place finish at Sectionals. This year, Boyle is 41-3, and he will wrestle at the Division 3 Championships tomorrow at Wakefield.

“I’m still looking to improve,” Boyle said. “There’s more I can do. A sectional win is good, but the state meet is obviously bigger.”
