Cam’s course

Newburyport resident Cam Leonard, an eighth-grader at the Immaculate Conception School, broke the Maudslay State Park course record for a middle-schooler last week in a meet against Nock Middle School. Leonard run the 2-mile course in 11:38, breaking a previous record set by Kevin Breen. Leonard broke the ICS school record last year in his first race as a seventh-grader with a time of 12:56. He later improved his time by another 15 seconds.

Clancy’s right arm

Newburyport High alumnus Joe Clancy continued to put up huge numbers as the senior quarterback of the Merrimack College football team Friday evening. Clancy completed 36 of 49 passes for 276 yards and five touchdowns in Merrimack’s 40-34 loss to Southern Connecticut State. On the season, Clancy has 15 touchdowns passes compared to two interceptions.

Esposito’s career day

Georgetown High alumnus Chris Esposito, a senior linebacker on the Stonehill College football team, had a career-high 10 tackles (seven solo) Friday night in his team’s 41-38 overtime victory against Assumption College. Esposito played quarterback and linebacker as a senior at Georgetown in 2010.

The Wright moves

Newburyport High alumnus Jon Wright, a junior receiver on the Massachusetts Maritime football team, reeled in his second touchdown reception in as many games Saturday in his team’s 52-18 victory over Maine Maritime in the 41st annual Admiral’s Cup. Massachusetts Maritime set a school record with 752 yards of total offense.

Davis recognized

Newburyport High alumna Cassaundra Davis, a junior on the Saint Michael’s College field hockey team, was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Sunday. Davis totaled four goals and two assists in three games last week, helping the Purple Knights go 2-1. In a 3-2 win over perennial power Bentley University on Tuesday, Davis netted all three of her team’s goals, including the tie-breaking winner with 9:17 remaining. At Franklin Pierce University on Thursday, she added a goal and two assists in a 6-4 victory.
