Welcome to D1
The Newburyport and Triton hockey programs will be vying for berths in the Division 1 North tournament in the 2013-14 season. Both programs recently applied for four-year commitments as Division 1 programs to the Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association, and as of yesterday, both programs had their applications accepted.
Both Newburyport and Triton will remain in the Cape Ann League during the four-year commitment, meaning each school will play 12 Cape Ann League games each season. For the 2013-14 season, both schools will play schedules similar to the ones they played in 2012-13, since the coaches mapped out their respective schedules prior to receiving word of the Division 1 acceptance.
In future years, Newburyport coach Paul Yameen and Triton coach Drew Wile will attempt to round out their respective schedules with Division 1 opponents. Newburyport already has four or five annual games against Division 1 opponents in place.
Newburyport and Triton will be eligible for the Division 1 tournament if they win 50 percent of their games — regardless of whether they are playing Division 1 or Division 2 opponents. The only difference moving forward is that Newburyport and Triton will play its postseason games against Division 1 foes.
Plenty of additional information will be forthcoming in The Daily News.
