Joe Clancy’s college career isn’t over quite yet.
The Newburyport High alumnus was one of three Merrimack College football players selected to play in the 2013 National Bowl Game this Sunday at Alfonso Field at Florida International University (FIU) Stadium in Miami.
Clancy, Shane Ferguson (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) and Michael Hubbard (Wakefield) will represent Merrimack in the game. The three seniors were driving forces behind one of Merrimack’s best season in five years, as the Warriors finished with seven victories for the first time since 2009.
Clancy became the first student-athlete in Northeast-10 Conference history to pass for over 4,000 yards in a single season. He led the conference and ranked second in the country in passing yards (4,116) and passing yards per game (374.2), while leading the nation in passing touchdowns (48), completions (396) and completion percentage (64.4%), while ranking first or second in the nation in multiple offensive categories. He was named a Harlon Hill Trophy Regional Finalist and earned NE-10 and New England Football Writers Association Offensive Player of the Year honors.
McNamara playing big role at USM
Pentucket Regional High alumna Erin McNamara is doing many of the same things she did on a basketball court in West Newbury for her college team, University of Southern Maine. Through seven games, McNamara ranks fifth in the Little East Conference in scoring with 13.6 points per game, seventh in assists with 3.4 per game, sixth in free-throw percentage (76 percent) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6).
Galer named to LEC All-Academic Team
Newburyport High alumna Nicole Galer, a sophomore soccer player at Keene State College, was named to the Little East Conference Fall All-Academic Team. Galer was a captain of the 2011 Newburyport girls soccer team.
