Newburyport's Guthro, Pentucket's Hayden claim CAL's top football honors

---- — In what is certainly a rarity for a lineman, Newburyport’s Dillon Guthro has been named Cape Ann League Kinney Division Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound lineman dominated in the trenches on both sides of the ball for the Clippers this season. He beat out a collection of dynamic skill-position players for the Player of the Year honor, including Masconomet’s Mike Tivinis and MacKenzie Cashin, Pentucket’s Jeff Porter, and Triton’s Justin Spillane.

Guthro attended skill camps at various colleges last summer in preparation for his senior season. Those camps included stops at Colgate, UNH, Lafayette, Holy Cross, Boston College and UMass Amherst. Prior to his team’s Thanksgiving game against Amesbury, Guthro attributed his dominant season to that offseason work.

“Part of it was the college thing,” Guthro said. “I did a lot of camps so I got a lot of guidance and teaching. Putting it to work in the Cape Ann League helped a lot.”

Guthro is being recruited by several schools, although at the moment, his top two choices are Colgate and UNH.

“I like the cold,” Guthro said. “I’m in the middle of the recruiting process. They call me every week and we talk about scholarships and everything else. Hopefully that stuff works out.”

Pentucket coach Steve Hayden earned CAL Kinney Division Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 7-2 record and a CAL Kinney Division title. The Sachems fell to Burlington in the Division 4 North final.

Hayden was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) at the annual awards banquet in April. The Pentucket Regional High physical education teacher has a career record of 190-148-2 as the head football coach. He has led teams to six Cape Ann League titles, three Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win (1999).
