Team to watch: Newburyport boys track

No local team has experienced a run of success over the last three years like the Newburyport boys indoor track program.

The Clippers will open the season next Saturday against Lynnfield and Ipswich as the three-time defending Eastern Mass. Division 4 champions.

Last season, the Clippers finished undefeated, won a Cape Ann League Open title, and went on to win their third straight Division 4 championship, edging out Old Rochester and Weston in the state meet.

This year’s team will be led by captains Jared Healey and James Nutter. The Clippers figure to have plenty of talent and depth in the distance events, after many of the same distance runners repeated as Division 5 state champions during the cross-country season in the fall.

Division 2 All-State cross-country champion Nick Carleo is the headliner of the distance group, after placing third in the mile (4:19.16) at the All-State Championships last season. Carleo dropped his own school record from 4:25.03 to 4:19.16 during the championship season last winter.

Perhaps due to the allure of being part of a state-champion team, the Clippers have received an influx of talent from other sports teams this winter. Two notable additions include Cape Ann League All-Star soccer player Tom Graham, and Cape Ann League All-Star football player Drew Beaupre.
