Port field hockey qualifies for state tourney

Newburyport 3, North Reading 0

The Clippers (9-2-2) qualified for the state tournament thanks to strong performances from Paige Hefferan (2 goals, assist), Kate McCauley (assist), Marie Cahalane (goal) and Lea Tomasz (assist).

Masconomet 2, Pentucket 0

The Sachems trailed 1-0 at the half.

“A tough game, but we hung in there and I give the girls credit,” Pentucket coach Ruth Beaton said. “Olivia Duggan had an excellent game.”

Girls Soccer

Amesbury 4, Manchester Essex 0

Megan Cullen (2 goals, assist), Hannah Zannini (goal, assist), Emily Martin (goal) and Janine Fatal (assist) all recorded points for the Indians. Amesbury coach Cathy Berry noted the strong play of Amanda Martin at midfield and Kelly DiFazio on defense.

Governor’s Academy 1, Lawrence Academy 0

In a rematch of last year’s New England Class B final, Kendall Ham scored the game’s lone goal off an assist from Katie Barrand, helping boost the Govs record to 6-0-1 overall, and to 4-0-1 in the ISL.

Pentucket 18, Manchester-Essex 42

Masconomet 21, Pentucket 34

The Sachems (6-1) fell for the first time this season against a talented Masconomet team. Running well for the Sachems were Alex Demeule (3rd; 15:52), Ian Mitchell (4th; 15:53), Drew Capener (10th; 16:31), Cooper Caritio (11th; 16:39), Devin McKee (12th; 16:40), Joe Lebrecque (14th; 16:42), and Jeremy Binding (20th; 17:29).
