Yankees beat Boston without Jeter

(Continued)

“You can see the polish to his game,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “A guy who’s got just one full year in the minor leagues. His decision making on the field and his approach at the plate is very consistent. His reads and routes in center field are on the spot.”

Four Boston relievers, including Joel Hanrahan and Andrew Bailey, held the Yankees hitless over the final 3 2-3 innings.

Yankees ace CC Sabathia pitched in a minor league game and gave up one run in six innings. He’s set to start the opener against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

Sabathia felt it made more sense to pitch in the minors than face Boston this late in spring training.

“I would much rather not have them see my stuff right now,” Sabathia said.

New York minor leaguer Vidal Nuno allowed two hits over five innings against Boston on the main field.

NOTES: The Yankees worked out free agent RHP Chien-Ming Wang at their minor league complex. Cashman said the team is thinking about offering the two-time 19-game winner for the Yankees, who has battled injuries the past few years, a minor league contract. ...Farrell said Red Sox SS Stephen Drew was being examined at the University of Pittsburgh by concussion specialist Dr. Michael Collins. Drew has not played since being hit in the helmet by a pitch on March 7. ... Boston LHP Craig Breslow (shoulder) will start throwing at 120 feet on Friday. ... The Red Sox could know within a few days when LHP Franklin Morales (bulging disk) will throw off a mound.
