Amesbury 5, Georgetown 3
For the first time in Cathy Berry's nine seasons coaching Amesbury, the Indians won their opening game, and it was a big one over the defending Division 3 North champion Royals.
The Indians went down early thanks to two Nicoline Holland goals in the first half, the first of which was assisted by Nicole DiMaio. However, the Indians tied the game within the first three minutes of the second half when Megan Cullen scored on a Whitney Whitlow assist, and just seconds later Hannah Zaninni scored on a through ball from Janine Fatal. Whitlow put Amesbury on top in 67th minute, which was short lived as Taylor Nelson tied the score for Georgetown on a penalty kick. Whitlow then tucked away a PK of her own in the 78th minute before Cullen scored her second with 10 seconds to go on an assist from Laura Kaminski.
"We struggled in the first half, but in the second half we scored quick and got the momentum going by attacking and maintaining possession," Berry said. "As far as the defense goes, Taylor Tagliente and Emily Martin did fantastic."

Georgetown 0, Ipswich 0
Both teams played to a scoreless draw in a strong defensive effort. Ipswich's goal keeper made 11 saves. The Ipswich defense keyed on Matt Bitchell, but he still managed a few attempts on goal. Ryan Browner and Max Harper played well in the midfield, and Andrew Savage controlled the backfield, redirecting many Ipswich chances.

Junior Jason Steele (34 points), senior Ryan Swanson (26 points), junior Mac Cavanaugh (22 points) and senior Josh Milewski (20 points) led the Sachems (1-1).
"We struggled today, and they did not," said Sachem coach Jayne Beaton, who noted that the Hornets had seven of their eight golfers score over 20 points. "We need to work on our short game from about 100 yards in. We just couldn't get the balls to drop today — plenty of rims. These (Sachems) have no problem off the tee."
Field Hockey
Newburyport 2, North Andover 1
The Clippers opened the 2010 season by beating the Scarlet Knights for the first time in five seasons Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Paige Hefferan and senior Cassandra Davis scored goals for the Clippers (1-0), and Newburyport sophomore Kaitlin McCauley notched a first half assist. Newburyport coach Lauren Hefferan praised the efforts of defensive backs Mackenzie Maguire, Hannah Carroll and midfielder Haley Johnson.
Georgetown 5, North Reading 0
Behind Sara Gaeta's hat trick and a goal and two assists by Lauren Hanlon, Georgetown (1-0) opened the season by rolling past North Reading at home Tuesday afternoon. Kailey Donovan added an unassisted goal in the second half, and Shannon Killian and Amanda Conti notched assists. The Royals led at the half, 2-0, and goalie Nikkie Perakis made five saves.
"Considering we were lacking in the scoring department last year, it felt great to open the season with five goals on the board. We can now only hope to keep it going," said Georgetown coach Nichole Turcotte, who praised the play of Melanie Prior, Jessie Rosenthal and Valerie Labrecque.
