Triton girls soccer team wins 1st tourney appearance

The Triton girls soccer team looked every bit the part of a state-tournament team in its first postseason appearance in the program’s 35-year history.

The 11th-seeded Vikings (9-7-3) pulled off a first-round upset of sixth-seeded Swampscott, 1-0, on Saturday in the Division 3 North tournament. Triton won after 100 minutes of scoreless soccer resulted in eight rounds of penalty kicks. Triton won the penalty-kick shootout 6-5.

“This game was one of the most fun games I have ever been involved in, from the great attendance and cheering section of the Triton students and families to the intensity that both teams brought to the game,” first-year Triton coach Michael Weisberg said.

Triton will visit third-seeded Shawsheen Tech (11-3-4) this afternoon at 2 in the Division 3 North quarterfinals. Weisberg credited senior captains Casey Ross and Madison Williams, along with seniors Shannon Dube and Rachel Hall for leading the squad to victory against Swampscott (9-6-4).

Triton keeper Christine Ciccone made a clinching save in the eighth round of penalty kicks to seal the victory.

“All in all, this once again was a team victory,” Weisberg said. “Swampscott is a great team and program, they left everything on the field. Losing in (penalty kicks) is a hard way to go. They should hold their heads high and be proud of the game they played and the successful season they had.”
