---- — The Triton football team is mired in its first losing streak of the season.

The Vikings (5-4) suffered a surprising 21-7 loss to Hamilton-Wenham (4-5) Saturday on the road. The Vikings entered the Division 4 playoffs as the No. 4 seed, while the Generals were seeded eighth.

Both teams were eliminated from the playoffs last weekend, although Hamilton-Wenham responded to a contest with less at stake Saturday.

“We didn’t play very well at all, but I don’t want to use the fact that we’re not in the playoffs as a cop-out,” Triton coach Pat Sheehan said. “At this point in the season, only six teams in the state are going to win a state championship. There are 250 teams that aren’t, and they’ll continue the season.”

Justin Spillane led Triton with 18 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Bradley Whitman completed 12 of 25 passes for 118 yards and three interceptions. Mark Boyle had three catches for 56 yards.

“(Hamilton-Wenham) wanted it, and they had a great game plan. Ours didn’t work out well at all. We wanted to throw the ball, and they were able to cover us and beat us up front. It was disappointing. We were outcoached, and I’ll take that one.”
