Downey won her lone tournament match against Hamilton-Wenham 6-2, 6-2, but where she really stood out was in the individual state tournament. After falling in the North Quarterfinals last year, Downey reached the semifinals this year to finish in the Top 4 of a field of 116. She beat Lynnfield’s Sara Mezini in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-2 before losing to Burlington’s Ada Wiggins – one of the state’s top players – 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Going into her senior year, Beaton said Downey will likely focus primarily on trying to advance further into the individual tournament while helping her team by winning as many regular season matches as possible. After that, he said she will likely continue her career in college.
Kirkpatrick, meanwhile, will attend Endicott College in the fall, where he will join the school’s tennis team and continue to compete relatively close to home.
