The Newburyport boys lacrosse team is making an annual tradition of earning a high seed in the state tournament.
The Clippers (12-3) learned yesterday that they earned the fifth seed in this year’s East Division 3 tournament. They will open tournament play against 28th-seed Norwell at a date and time to be determined by the Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association in the coming days. The MIAA released all tournament pairings yesterday.
Last year’s Clippers earned the fourth seed in East Division 3 after posting a 14-2 record in the regular season. The Clippers won their preliminary round game against Whittier Tech, 17-0, before falling to a familiar foe in 20th-seeded Cohasset, 15-14. The Clippers were also eliminated by Cohasset in 2011, although that season the Clippers were the underdogs. They fell on the road, 17-6.
The Newburyport girls lacrosse team returns to the Division 2 North tournament for the third year in a row. The Clippers (11-6) drew the 11th seed in the bracket after setting a new program record for single-season wins. They will visit sixth-seeded Watertown (16-0-1) in the opening round Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Last year, the Clippers earned the seventh seed on the heels of a 10-5 season, and they hosted Cape Ann League rival Manchester Essex in the opening round. The visiting team pulled off an 11-10 upset in Newburyport. The Clippers held a 10-8 lead in the game with less than three minutes remaining.
In 2011, Newburyport drew the 10th seed and opened tournament play at seventh-seeded Triton. The Vikings won the game at home, 16-10.
The Pentucket boys lacrosse team earned the 25th seed in the East Division 2 tournament after posting a 13-6 record this season. The Sachems will open against eighth-seeded Winchester (13-5) at a date and time to be determined by the MIAA.
The Sachems’ postseason run, regardless of its length from this point forward, has to be considered a success considered the team finished 0-14 last season.
