NEWBURYPORT — Thousands of children have gone through the Bresnahan Elementary School over the past 57 years, and to celebrate the school’s final days, the Newburyport Parent Teacher Organization is inviting everyone to participate in the 9th annual Spring Fever 5K and Family Fun Run, which will start and end at the school for the last time.
This year’s race will take place on Sunday, May 4. According to Kristen Daigle, co-chair of the race and a PTO representative, the event is typically the PTO’s most successful annual fundraiser, with all of the proceeds helping to support activities at the Brown, Bresnahan and Molin elementary schools, ranging from field trips to the annual science fair.
“We usually get around 300 people, so we’re hoping to top that,” Daigle said. “With sponsors we usually aim for about $20,000.”
The 5K is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and registration is $25 per runner if pre-registered by April 30, or $30 on the day of the race. Prior to the start of the 5K, there will also be a series of 100-yard Fun Runs for children aged pre-K to third grade. Those will begin at noon, and kids can register for $5 each, $10 per family.
Daigle said the race will start on High Street in front of Fowles Market, and runners will then travel down High Street toward Atkinson Common before taking a right onto Moulton Street. After that, runners will go down Moulton before taking a right onto Merrimac Street, and then eventually they will loop back up to High Street via Kent Street before finishing back at the Bresnahan School.
“They finish right at the Bresnahan driveway with tons of spectators, tons of kids. It’s a lot of fun,” Daigle said. “And then afterward everyone enjoys the music and we do the awards ceremony.”
