Newburyport lacrosse crushes Lynnfield 19-6

NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport boys lacrosse team had its way with Lynnfield yesterday, putting the Pioneers away early to win 19-6 on a beautiful Tuesday morning at War Memorial Stadium.

The Clippers jumped out to an early lead and then blew the game open in the second quarter, taking a 12-2 lead going into halftime. Though Lynnfield got some offense going in the second half, the Clippers continued to win the possession battles and find the back of the net until the final whistle sounded.

“We kind of did our business by halftime and then we were able to play a lot of our kids and get them some extra running time,” said Newburyport coach Ed Gaudiano after the game.

Junior Matt Kelleher and freshman Ben Mirageas led the way for the Clippers, recording 5 points each with 4 goals and an assist. Senior Nick Federico tallied 4 assists, and senior Jared Healey added 3 goals and an assist of his own.

“Matt’s our go-to guy, and Ben’s working his way in as a freshman,” Gaudiano said. “We’re working him in on that first midfield line so he’s getting a lot of runs, and I thought he looked good too, being a young guy learning the system.”

On the other side, Lynnfield’s Danny Sullivan was easily the Pioneers’ top performer. Sullivan had little difficulty penetrating the Newburyport defense whenever he had the ball, and he wound up scoring 5 of the Pioneers’ 6 goals, including four straight in the second half.

Others who got on the score sheet for Newburyport included junior Michael Shay (2 goals, 1 assist), junior Brendan Barraclough (2 goals), sophomore William Fogel (2 goals), junior Jonathan Bjako (1 goal, 1 assist) and junior Matthew Cote (1 goal, 1 assist). Senior goaltender Dillon Guthro also made 5 saves on the day.

Though he didn’t record a point, Gaudiano offered high praise to senior defenseman Kevin MacDougall, who he said gave the Clippers a big lift off faceoffs and was one of the main reasons why Newburyport was able to control the ball as effectively as they did.
