Pentucket baseball beats Ipswich, gets back to .500 after slow start

It took a little longer than head coach Tom L’Italien would have liked, but the Pentucket baseball team (4-4) is finally starting to get into the swing of things.

Plagued by poor performance at the plate all season long, the Sachems have broken through offensively over the past few games, and on Saturday they really got going, breaking out to an 11-0 lead in the first three innings en route to a rain-shortened 11-7 win over Ipswich in six innings.

The Sachems picked up 15 hits as a team, led by Ryan Kuchar (3-4, 2 runs and 3 RBIs), John Sirios (2-2, 2 runs and an RBI) and Pat Beaton (2-2, 2 RBIs and a run). Pentucket was bolstered by a strong performance by junior pitcher Sean Keegan, who picked up his first varsity win by allowing 3 runs on 3 hits over 4 innings of work to go with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Pentucket improves to 4-4 with the win, getting back to .500 after starting the season 0-3.

“The kids, when it wasn’t going well they worked hard, and now they’re continuing to work hard,” L’Italien said. “So that’s good from a coaching perspective.”

The Sachems will be back in action tomorrow when they head to Manchester Essex for a 3:45 p.m. matchup.

Manchester Essex 4, Triton 1

Coming off a hard-fought victory at Ipswich, the Triton baseball team (3-6) stumbled this past Friday, losing to winless Manchester Essex 4-1 in a game played under the lights at Endicott College.

Senior captain Nick Desrocher pitched a great game in defeat, going the distance while giving up 4 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Manchester Essex scored its runs by way of a pair of RBI base hits, along with two passed balls that bounced of Endicott’s turf field over the catcher.

The Vikings offense, meanwhile, wasn’t able to get anything going, with the only run coming by way of an RBI base hit by James Wood to score Brad Whitman.
