---- — Two years ago, the Pentucket boys lacrosse team went winless. Last year, the Sachems had an incredible turnaround and reached the state tournament, and now Pentucket is 8-2 and looks set to make it back to the postseason again.
Many of the players who helped turn around Pentucket lacrosse last year are helping push the Sachems toward the top of the league standings, and one of those players is Connor Beaton, who led the Sachems with four goals in yesterday’s 10-4 win over North Reading.
In his second season with the varsity team, the junior attacker has emerged as one of the Sachems’ top goal scorers. Over the past week, he has recorded a hat trick and an assist against Lynnfield, scored two goals and an assist against Manchester Essex and had two goals in Pentucket’s recent loss against Newbury-port.
Beaton also has the benefit of playing with his twin brother Ryan, and the overall advantage of having a seemingly endless number of cousins and family members come through the Pentucket school system.
In this week’s Around The Horn, Connor talks about lacrosse, his big family and what some of his future plans are.
How long have you been playing lacrosse? “Since third grade.”
Do you play any other sports too? “I play soccer and basketball.”
How long have you been on varsity for lacrosse? “Since my sophomore year. I’m a junior now, so two years. I wasn’t on the team my freshman year when we had zero wins, but last year was good. We made the playoffs and lost in the first round, but coming back from zero wins was a great turnaround and now we’re having a great season so far.”
Are you looking at any schools? “I want to try to play some D3 lacrosse, but I haven’t been looking at it too much so far, just some places like Babson, but I haven’t reached out to any.”
Who is the best athlete you’ve ever played against? “The kids from Masco, their teams are always amazing. I don’t know if I’ve ever beat them, except in basketball. I’ve never beat them in soccer, I haven’t beat them in lacrosse yet.”
Do you have a job? “Not right now, but I’m probably going to get one this summer.”
How many siblings do you have? “Four — my twin brother Ryan is on the team. I have two older brothers and one younger sister.”
Do you and Ryan get along well? “We get along really well. He’s also having a great year so far at midfield and we get along great.”
Do you have any favorite stories or memories with Ryan? “Holidays and stuff like that, our entire family and all our cousins get together — things like that, I guess.”
