Winning weird

Pentucket wins seventh straight game, beats Georgetown 7-2

WEST NEWBURY — A six-run third inning was enough to down Georgetown (5-6) yesterday as Pentucket (8-4) won 7-2.

With the win, the Sachems have now won seven games in a row after starting the season 1-4. It’s a roll that has come to fruition with a steady mindset and “weird” team chemistry.

“We are definitely weird,” said starting pitcher Pat Beaton. “That’s what we call it on our team. We are the most enthusiastic team in our league and always have a lot of energy on the field, off the field and practice. It’s not strategy, it’s just who we are. We are enthusiastic all the time.”

The way for Pentucket to keep its streak alive is simply to not think about it. In fact, the Sachems choose not to discuss game outcomes at all.

“I’m sure everyone thinks we talk about winning streaks and everything like that, but even when we were 1-4 we never panicked,” Pentucket coach Tom L’Italien said. “We knew what we had in our dugout. We are just simply trying to work hard every day, get better and be great teammates. That’s been the message since March 17. It was the message the day after we went 1-4 and it will be the first thing we talk about tomorrow on May 7.

“I think it really quiets the mind knowing that that’s our approach every day, and not worrying about results. We have not once talked about wins and losses, just the process.”

Though allowing 2 runs through 5 innings pitched would make most high school pitchers happy, Beaton felt as though he lacked his best stuff in yesterday’s start.

“I think that was definitely not one of my best outings,” Beaton said. “I mean, I was throwing from behind a lot.”

While not his best performance, Beaton found ways to make the big pitches at opportune times.
