Amesbury downs Notre Dame to reach regional semifinals

---- — AMESBURY — The Amesbury softball team advanced to the Division III North Semifinals yesterday with an 11-2 routing of Tyngsboro’s Notre Dame Academy.

Starting pitcher Rachel Cyr welcomed the Lancers (12-11) to Amesbury (16-6) by striking out seven batters over the game’s first three innings, though it was her dominant performance offensively that paid dividends for her team. With a perfect 4-4 day at the plate, Cyr either scored a run or drove one in at every plate appearance. She would finish with three runs scored and 3 RBIs.

On the mound, Cyr allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out nine. While she kept Notre Dame dormant offensively for the game’s majority, the Lancers strung hits together to score twice in the top of the fourth.

“She was pretty solid overall,” said Amesbury head coach Chris Perry. “That one inning was very shaky, but they’ve been coming on. We’re getting better. I don’t know what’s going to dictate the next game, but we’ve gotten better, especially since those first couple games in April.”

After Notre Dame’s Kendall Liggett and Regan Szekely scored to tie the game at two in the top of the fourth, Amesbury came roaring back in the inning’s bottom half. Amesbury’s Zoe Fitzgerald and Lauren Fedorchak each reached home before Amanda Schell and Alexis Boswell scored on a routine fly ball to center field by Autumn Kligerman that fell in on an error.

Cyr then sent Kligerman home with an RBI single to score the fifth run of Amesbury’s six-run inning.

“The kids in front of her have been pretty good at getting on base for her,” Perry said. “Boswell and Schell have been getting on base lately. A lot of times, RBI leaders at any level are those that play on teams where guys get on base in front of them.”

After that strong inning that made the score 8-2, Amesbury continued its relentless offensive attack with a three-run sixth.

With the win, Amesbury heads to the regional semifinals to face No. 10-seeded Lowell Catholic (14-8) tomorrow at 6:45 p.m. at Martin Field in Lowell.

The Indians have not only beaten their playoff opponents this year, but have blown them away. After securing a bye in the preliminary round as the tournament’s No. 6 seed, Amesbury has outscored its two tournament opponents by a score of 28-3. Lowell Catholic also earned a preliminary round bye and has outscored its first two opponents, Winthrop and Austin Prep, by a combined 8-1.

“I don’t know much about Lowell Catholic,” Perry said. “We don’t see them much. They beat Winthrop in the first round, who are decent in the North East Conference, so they must be good.”
