Georgetown baseball, Triton boys tennis eye trip to regional finals

The No. 3-seeded Georgetown baseball team (14-7) will continue its march through the Division IV North Tournament when it faces No. 2-seeded Boston International (16-4) in this afternoon’s semifinal at Alumni Field in Lowell.

So far neither team has faced an especially difficult road through the tournament. Georgetown and Boston International each received a first-round bye before being matched up against teams that were well below .500 in the quarterfinals. Georgetown beat No. 11 Matignon (7-14) by a score of 7-4, while Boston International shut out No. 10 Winthrop (8-13) by a score of 3-0.

Georgetown comes into today’s game having won nine of its past 10 games, including a 5-4 walk-off win over a previously unbeaten Masconomet team. The lone blemish over that stretch came in the finals of the Spofford Tournament Championship game, when the Royals lost to Newburyport 8-5.

Today’s game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., and the winner will move on to the Division IV North Championship to play the winner of tomorrow’s semifinal between No. 1 Lowell Catholic (19-2) and No. 5 O’Bryant (12-7).

Triton boys tennis set for rematch against North Reading

Coming off Saturday’s 4-1 upset of No. 2-seeded Austin Prep in the Division III North Quarterfinals, the Triton boys tennis team will be matched up with a familiar foe in this afternoon’s semifinal.

The No. 7 Vikings (13-5) will face No. 6 North Reading (12-4) in a battle of Cape Ann League rivals today at 2 p.m. at the Newburyport Racquet Club.

In their last meeting on May 5, North Reading got the better of Triton, edging out a close 3-2 victory. Triton got victories from John DiDonato at second singles 7-5, 6-2, and the team of Sam Ross and Eric Ninthala won at second doubles 6-3, 6-3, but the Hornets won the other three matches to hand the Vikings just their second loss of the year.

Triton and North Reading have both looked great since the tournament began. The Vikings started off by sweeping No. 10 Arlington Catholic 5-0 in the first round before beating Austin Prep in the quarterfinals, while North Reading has rolled over both of its opponents, sweeping No. 11 Watertown and No. 3 St. Mary’s (Lynn) by a score of 5-0 to reach the semis.
