Georgetown set for tournament rematch with Lowell Catholic

GEORGETOWN – When Justin Spurr took over as head coach of the Georgetown baseball program in 2012, he won a state championship on his first try.

Now, the third year head coach has his team back in the Division IV North Final just three wins away from making it two out of three, and the way things are set, deep runs in the state tournament may soon become a regular occurrence.

“It’s been great, our feeder program has been great,” Spurr said. “Mark Rowe, who was with Georgetown for 12 years, he built up the program, and a lot of the youth organizations have done some great things.”

Georgetown (15-7) will face top seeded Lowell Catholic (20-2) at LeLacheur Park in Lowell this afternoon with a chance to win the sectional title and advance to the state semifinals.

Though Georgetown and Lowell Catholic haven’t played each other this season, the two programs have become plenty familiar with one another during the postseason. This will be the fifth season in a row that Georgetown and Lowell Catholic will meet in the state tournament, and while the Royals have generally come out on top, last season the Crusaders got their revenge and knocked Georgetown out of the playoffs.

“We beat them the previous couple, and they beat us last year in a tough game where we had a couple of opportunities, and they went on to win the whole thing,” Spurr said. “They graduated a lot, but they have a great program, so they’d be a tough program to go up against.”

Coming into today’s game, the Royals are led by a balanced lineup highlighted by All-League shortstop Colby Ingraham and All-League right fielder Ben Noelk, along with Cape Ann League All Star pitcher Patrick Slack.

“He’s our workhorse,” Spurr said of Slack. “We minimized his innings this year to hopefully ride him through the tournament, and Colby coming back from that knee injury we didn’t know what to expect, but he’s been great.”
