Cape Ann League honors
After leading his team to a CAL Division 3 championship, Amesbury quarterback Matt Talbot was named the league’s MVP. Talbot accounted for 26 touchdowns this season. Amesbury coach Thom Connors collected CAL Coach Division 3 Coach of the Year. Newburyport defensive lineman Dillon Guthro was named CAL Division 3 Player of the Year. Pentucket tailback Cody Rothwell was the league’s Offensive Player of the Year.
The following players were named All-CAL Division 3: Amesbury receivers Tommy Connors and Devlin Gobeil, linebacker Perry Mroz, offensive lineman Curran O’Connor, defensive back Ben Cullen, defensive lineman Jake Taylor and kicker Mac Short; Newburyport defensive back Colton Fontaine, defensive lineman T.J. Souther, linebacker Sam Francis and defensive lineman Tyler Cusack; Triton linebacker Joe Ruocco and receiver Travis Kneeland; and Pentucket linebacker Tim Freiermuth and offensive lineman Mike McCarron.
CAL Division 3 All-Stars included Amesbury’s Shawn Bannon, Grant Belino, Nick Fiorella and Pat Scanlon; Pentucket’s Connor McGuirk, Dan Thornton, Franco Pizzarella, Kevin Miles and Chris Croteau; and Newburyport’s Connor Wile, Ian Michaels and Trevor Bradbury.

Amesbury 2, North Reading 1
Anthony Licciardello led Amesbury (1-0-0) to an opening-night victory with a goal and an assist. Freshman J.T. Chamberlain added a goal. Tabor Smith had an assist. Goalie Evan King made 18 saves.
Girls Basketball
Medford 49, Georgetown 39
Marissa Agganis had 17 points for Georgetown (0-1). Kristin Hogan added 13.
Wrestling
Lynnfield 54, Georgetown/Ipswich 18
In spite of the lopsided score, Royals head coach Mike Curley was pleased with the performance of many of his wrestlers on Wednesday night. Senior co-captain David Ingraham (132 lbs.) scored an exciting victory at 0:39 in the first period, Matt Carey (182 lbs.) scored a pin fall early in the second period at 2:39, and Dave Conway (192 lbs.) came out guns blazing and scored a fall in the first period at 0:32.

The Clippers beat Hamilton-Wenham for the first time in school history during the indoor season. Liz Fiascone (high hurdles, 7.9), Carly Brand (50-yard dash, 6.45), Maryam Moshrefi (300, 47.0), Merri Adsit (shot put, 30-5 1/2), and the 4x400 relay team (4:37) of Katie Gorenflo, Moshrefi, Fiascone and Liza Twomey placed first. Bella Palma (600, 1:35.9) also collected a top finish against Manchester Essex.
