Triton falls to perennial-power Masconomet

BYFIELD — The top two wrestling teams from last year’s Cape Ann League Open — Triton and Masconomet — met yesterday for the league-opener.

The defending CAL champion Chieftains posted a 43-21 victory over host Triton (2-2 overall, 0-1 CAL).

For Triton, Luke Boyle, Tom Howell and Mark Boyle won by pin. Luke Boyle earned his victory at 138 points in 5:35. Howell wrestled in the 152-pound weight class, earning his fall at 0:57. Mark Boyle won in 0:44 at 160 pounds.

Triton’s defending Division 3 North sectional champion Victor Ramirez earned the team’s only other victory, a 10-4 decision at 120 pounds.

“Masco is a tough team,” Triton coach Shawn McElligott said. “I have no problem with the kids’ effort. Victor Ramirez had the match of the day with a solid win over Masco’s Nick Rizza. He was in total control of the match over a pretty tough kid.”

Masconomet and Triton dominated last year’s CAL Open, placing in the top two spots after strong seasons. Triton wrestlers won league titles in five of the 14 weight classes, although Masconomet held a 190-160 1/2 advantage over the Vikings at the end of the day.

The Vikings went on to place second behind Wakefield in the Division 3 North sectional championship, narrowly missing its bid for a repeat sectional title. In 2011, Triton earned a Division 3 state championship. Ramirez was also a sectional champion that season, and McElligott was Division 3 Coach of the Year.

The Vikings return to the mat Saturday at the Marlboro Invitational.
