Former Georgetown star Shannon Hartford has been named MVP Attacker for Presbyterian College, which is located in Clinton, S.C. The sophomore scored 26 goals and had 13 assists to lead the Blue Hose.
"It's a very exciting honor, and one I wasn't expecting," said Hartford. "I played midfield in high school but moved to attack when I came here."
Hartford's mother, Heather, was her high school coach at Georgetown. She was a varsity player all four years and set the school record for most points as well as being second highest in the state. The 2009 graduate is having a great career at Division 1 Presbyterian.
"I love it here," said Hartford, a psychology major. "I started playing when I was in seventh grade after my Mom started the JV program in Georgetown. I think it's great to get kids involved at an early age. You have a huge advantage if you start younger and learn the game so by the time you are in high school you know what you're doing."
Presbyterian is eliminating the men's lacrosse program after this season, but Hartford said women's lacrosse won't be affected.
"The men weren't in a league, and that made the difference," said Hartford. "I feel bad they are losing their team, but it's good to know our program is safe."
