Merrimac residents Tom and Ellen Zappala are celebrating the release of their new baseball book, “The Cracker Jack Collection: Baseball’s Prized Players,” with a local reception at the Merrimac Public Library on Sept. 21. The book focuses on the lives of the players featured on baseball cards used as prizes in Cracker Jack boxes in 1914 and 1915. Now 100 years old, these cards have become extremely collectible and valuable. The players include Eddie Collins, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. The event on Sept. 21 will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a talk and reception. Special guest Brian “Cappy” Sheehy will also be on hand in uniform to speak about his vintage team, The Essex Base Ball Club, and how the club continues the traditions of baseball as it was played in its infancy. A book signing by the Zappalas, along with contributor John Molori, is scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For every book sold that evening, $5 will be donated to the Merrimac Public Library for use in the Children’s Library.
