Captain of the Bucs

Newburyport High alumna Lauren Bateman was named captain of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy women’s cross-country team yesterday for the upcoming season. Bateman, a native of Newbury, is a three-year letter-winner along with her co-captain Liz Leonardi. Coach Linda Letourneau describes the duo as “dedicated and gifted leaders both in competition and in our campus community. They have set, and will continue to set, incredibly positive examples for their teammates and classmates, and they are strong representatives of our program.”

Massachusetts Maritime begins its season Saturday when it hosts the Ninth Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational.

Former Clipper runners

Of all the River Rival sports teams, the Newburyport boys cross-country program has the most alumni currently on college rosters. The list of former Clippers running in college includes Joe Santo at Stonehill College, Greg Englehart at Colgate University, Matt Orlando at Xavier University, Chris Suprin at UMass Lowell and Keith Conway at Wesleyan College. Newburyport High alumna Lindsay Cullen is also an assistant coach at Dickinson College.

No locals at UMass Lowell

Since Amesbury native Shannon Hlebichuk took over as head coach of the UMass Lowell field hockey team in 2004, the program has served as a hotbed of local talent with seemingly two or three players from the River Rival Region on the roster each season. This year, the first in which UMass Lowell is playing Division 1, no local athletes are playing at UMass Lowell. The River Hawks are off to a tough start in their first season at the D1 level. They are 0-2 with losses against UMass and Northwestern, two schools ranked in the top 20 in the nation.

some local D1 River Hawks

Several local athletes will be making the jump to Division 1 college athletics this year at UMass Lowell. According to the current rosters on the UMass Lowell website, those athletes include Suprin; former Newburyport baseball player Matt Mottola; former Amesbury track and field athletes Garrett King, Kevin Johnston, Jake Stelline, Cassie Harding, Taylor Tagliente and Renee Vigneault; former Triton golfer Andrew Fecteau; former Newburyport hockey player Billy Eiserman; former Pentucket soccer player James Costello; former Triton track athletes Brittany Caprio and Taelour Murphy; and former Pentucket track athlete Lexi Kitsakos.
