Triton girls lacrosse opens season today at Gloucester

BYFIELD — The Triton girls lacrosse team opens its season this afternoon, and after two consecutive losing seasons, head coach Stacey Beaulieu believes her team is ready to take the next step back to the postseason this year.

“We were 5-13 last year. Obviously it wasn’t the season we wanted to have, but we were coming off a one-win season the year before that, so it was an improvement,” Beaulieu said.

“Our goal last year was to be competitive in every game, and we accomplished that, and this year it’s to be competitive and to come away with the victory. We know we have the ability to win games this year.”

Though the Triton roster is filled with young and inexperienced players, the team does have a solid core of upperclassmen that it can lean on. Courtney Brown, Kaitlyn Muldowney, Megan Muldowney and Nicole Sullivan are the team’s four captains this year, and Beaulieu said the team would likely go as far as they can lead them.

“They’re my four captains and they’re going to be the anchors of the team this year,” she said.

Also returning for Triton is sophomore Lily Dow, who was a Daily News All-Star in ice hockey this past winter, along with Sarah Ganzenmuller and Jess Greeney. Beaulieu said her team has a number of impressive newcomers this year too, though it’s too early to tell if any of them will become breakout stars.

Despite being young, Beaulieu said her team has already formed a tight bond, and if the team has a specific strength, it’s that they truly are a team.

“These kids really love each other and love playing with each other. They have a great time together and I think that’s going to be our strength this year,” Beaulieu said. “They’ll pull each other up when one player isn’t having a great game, and they’ll celebrate their teammates when they do. They’re a great group of girls who really love playing together.”
