Athlete of the Year

Greg Englehart

Newburyport, Sr.

After rounding out his resume with a bevy of individual accomplishments through his first three years at Newburyport, Englehart entered his final season with one goal: leading his team to a state championship. Englehart captained a team that trained arduously over the summer and later established a pack mentality during the dual-meet season, running in herds of five, six or seven. The all-inclusive approach allowed the younger runners to learn from the more experienced cross country runners. Englehart's Clippers pushed to a 12-0 regular season record, a Cape Ann League Championship, a second-place finish in the EMass. Division 4 Championships and an eighth-place finish at the Mass. All-State Division 2 Championships.

Individually, Englehart had the team's top finish in perhaps its biggest meet — the Division 4 Championships — finishing 12th overall (17:45) at Franklin Park. He placed 74th overall (18:28.3) at the All-State Meet the following week. The four-year varsity letterman in cross country, indoor and outdoor track is a four-time Daily News All-Star and two-time Daily News Athlete of the Year (spring 2009, fall 2009). He is the school's record holder in the mile (4:33) in indoor track. He also won a CAL title in the 2-mile (10:02) last spring.

Englehart, who maintains a 3.72 GPA, was Newburyport's team co-MVP. He earned All-CAL and All-EMass. honors. He plans to run at Colgate University, Providence College, Stonehill College or William and Mary College next fall.
