Byfield native Kaitlin Spurling has wasted little time getting acclimated at Harvard University, where the freshman plays hockey for the fifth-ranked team in the country.
Playing in the largest and most competitive conference for women's college hockey, the Noble and Greenough graduate was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon. Spurling, who ranks fourth on the Crimson in points (7) with four goals and three assists, netted her first career power-play goal in Harvard's 2-1 victory over Connecticut on Dec. 8.
Spurling's undefeated Crimson (6-0-2) will return to action after finals and winter break on Jan. 8.
Spurling spent her freshman and sophomore years at Pingree School before transferring to Noble and Greenough before her junior season. She led Noble and Greenough to Division 1 New England championships and Independent School League championships in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, she was named the Division 1 Tournament MVP.

Newburyport High alumnus Joe Pace will captain the Bowdoin College baseball team this spring in his senior season. Pace posted a 7-0 record last spring, setting a Bowdoin school record for wins in a season. His 3.86 ERA was best among Bowdoin starters.
Pace helped lift Newburyport to three Cape Ann League titles in his final three seasons at Newburyport (2004, 2005, 2006).
"We have a strong freshman class this season," Pace said. "We played fall-ball and looked really good. We had inter-team scrimmages every Friday, and a lot of bad blood formed between our pitchers and hitters. It's all for the good of competition."
Pace's former Newburyport classmate Jared Notargiacomo served as a captain of the UMass Lowell baseball team this fall. His team will vote for baseball captains again in the spring. Last season, Notargiacomo, a catcher, hit .306 with a .988 fielding percentage.
"I'm hoping I'll be voted a captain again," Notargiacomo said. "The fall went really well. It was good to get out and play baseball again after a few months off."
