Triton golf team wins Division 3 title

NORTH READING — The Triton golf team collected the school’s first state championship yesterday since the Triton wrestling team matched the same feat in 2011.

Triton placed first among 18 teams at the Division 3 State Championships at Hillview Golf Course in North Reading. With the victory, the Vikings qualified for the Mass. State Finals, which will be played Monday at Red Tail Golf Course in Devens.

The state championship is the first for the Triton golf team in school history, according to coach Rich Dube. It caps a successful season that saw the Vikings post a 15-5 record.

In the statewide competitions, each school enters six golfers, and the top four scores are counted. Triton had four golfers shoot in the 70s, led by Jon Seward, who placed second overall behind Newburyport’s Brendan Crowther with a 4-over par 73. Triton’s Kyle Hillick placed third with a 74. Mike Shea was fourth with a 76. Jack Cook tied for fifth with a 77.

No other school was within 11 strokes of Triton’s combined score of 300.

“It’s exciting,” Triton coach Rich Dube said. “We’ve never won it before; we’ve never even made it to the state finals (with a top-three finish). It’s really cool.”

Last week, Triton also collected its seventh River Rival Championship trophy in the last 14 years, by placing first in the quad-match with Newburyport, Amesbury and Pentucket.
