Newburyport hockey clinches CAL title

Newburyport 4, North Reading 0

The Clippers (10-2-4 overall, 9-1-1 CAL) clinched their first Cape Ann League title in Paul Yameen’s 10 years as head coach. Nick Mombello scored the first two goals. Jay Dylingowski and Timmy Brennan also scored goals. Tyler Cusack and Andrew Williams had two assists each. Matt Kelleher, Ben Ventura and Pat Crowley also had assists. Alex Buckley stopped 14 shots to post his fourth shutout.

Boys Basketball

Newburyport 52, Triton 43

The Clippers (10-5) clinched a tourney berth for the third year in a row. Ian Michaels had 14 points, six rebounds and three steals for Newburyport. Colby Morris added 12 points and four assists. Jake Baribeault played strong interior defense.

“Three years in a row, every year it’s special,” Newburyport coach Tom L’Italien said. “It’s a symbol of our team working together, and battling through adversity. We’ve done that. We’re pleased to make the tournament, and now we hope to improve our seed.”

For Triton (7-9), Sam McKenzie (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Ellsworth Rogers (10 points, 12 rebounds) had double-doubles.

Manchester Essex 52, Amesbury 49

Kyle Arseneau led the Indians with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Grant Bellino had 12 points and nine rebounds for Amesbury (7-8). Tommy Connors chipped in 10 points on three 3-pointers and a free throw. Pat Halloran tallied seven points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Lynnfield 72, Georgetown 40

Matt Gott led the Royals (3-12) with seven points.

Girls Basketball

Newburyport 62, Triton 31

Lea Tomasz led Newburyport (9-6) with 17 points. Mary Pettigrew added 14. Lilly Donovan had 10 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

Pentucket 58, North Reading 34

Coley Viselli led Pentucket (16-1) with 15 points. Alex Moore had 10. Tess Nogueira added nine.
