The Indians (8-8-1 overall, 5-6-0 CAL) posted their first victory over Newburyport since 2006 on Wednesday night. The teams have met at least twice every year since. Anthony Licciardello led Amesbury with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Mike Duggan scored his first varsity goal for the Indians. Zach Fitzgerald and Andy Reidy also scored goals. Tabor Smith had three assists. Evan King earned the victory in net.

“I’m happy for the team and happy for the program,” Amesbury coach Chris Kuchar said. “All three lines produced, and we earned the two points. We’re one step closer to the tournament, but we’re not there yet. It’s a big win for the program. They got the better of us for seven years, but at least we got the last one.”

Newburyport’s Matt Kelleher, Jay Dylingowski and Tim Brennan scored goals. Connor Wile had two assists.

“They outworked us, outbattled us and outcoached us,” Newburyport coach Paul Yameen said. “They deserved to win the game, and they probably deserved to win the first game this season too.”
