Clamping down again

Sachems stay defensive, head back to TD Garden

Intense defense continued for the final two quarters, but there was no consistency offensively. The Sachems scored just 15 points in the second half and all but two of them were by McNamara and Viselli. Watertown actually outscored Pentucket 18-15 in the final two frames.

“Those last two quarters seemed to take forever,” said Coach McNamara. “Maybe we had a little letdown after getting out to the big lead.”

However, the bottom line, said daughter Kelsi, is that “we didn’t play as well as we wanted, but we got the win. That was the main thing.”

The defending state champion Sachems will need to play better today when they face South champion Archbishop Williams (21-5) in the EMass finals at TD Garden.

“We have some work to do,” said coach McNamara. “The Archies are good, one of the best teams in the state and they have girls 6-feet, 6-3 and 6-2. We’ll have our hands full.”

Archbishop Williams and Pentucket have met in the state semifinals three times since 2007, with Archbishop Williams winning twice. But the Sachems have experience in these big games, and they do have that ever-present defense.

As for Watertown, there will be another day.

“That’s a lot better team than they looked today,” said McNamara. “I told their coach (Pat Ferdinand) after the game that they’ll be back here. They’ve got talent and they’re well coached.”
