Tourney opener postponed for Port boys basketball team

NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport boys basketball team will have to wait at least one extra day for its revenge game.

Due to last night's snowfall, Newburyport's state-tournament opener against Watertown was rescheduled for tonight at 7. The game is slated to be the second half of a double-header. The Newburyport girls basketball team will host Saugus first at 5 p.m.

Of course, additional snowfall and school closing today could cause further delays to the plans of the Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association, and another version of this same story could run in tomorrow's newspaper.

The Newburyport boys (14-6), seeded fourth in Eastern Mass. Division 3 North, will meet 13th-seed Watertown (6-14), a team that eliminated the Clippers in the sectional final last year at the Tsongas Center. Watertown has won three of its last four games after a slow start. On the other hand, the Clippers have lost two of their last three and three of their last five.

The winner of the boys' opening-round matchup will meet fifth-seed Arlington Catholic in the quarterfinal at a date and time to be determined. Arlington Catholic beat 12th-seed Minuteman 84-42 in an opening-round game Tuesday.

The Newburyport girls (13-7) will meet 11th-seed Saugus (8-12) in the opening round of the Eastern Mass. Division 3 North tournament. The winner is slated to meet third-seed Pentucket (18-4) on Sunday (4 p.m.) at Whittier Tech. Pentucket athletic director Dan Thornton decided to move the location for that game from Pentucket after seeing his school's gymnasium packed to capacity for the boys team's tournament-opener against Stoneham Tuesday night.
