They call themselves "The Family," and they are the first and last line of defense for Newburyport's lacrosse team.
Drawn together from a wide range of varsity sports and classes, five out of seven of these young men are new to the sport but have gotten the job done well enough to help the Clippers to a 14-2 regular-season record.
Postseason play, the just reward for so many high school teams, is now upon the River Rival Region and the rest of the state.
With each regular season wrapping up by Memorial Day, here is a breakdown of how your teams performed this spring.
Softball
Lowell 4, Newburyport 3
Kendra Dow had two hits for the Clippers (10-9) in the opening round of the North Andover Tournament. The Clippers will play the loser of last night's Georgetown vs. North Andover game today. Kendra Dow had two hits for the Clippers. Beth Castantini pitched a strong game, taking a lead into the seventh inning. Maddie Stanton played well defensively.
Today
BASEBALL: Bert Spofford Tournament (at Georgetown High) — Newburyport vs. Triton, 11 a.m.; Ipswich vs. Georgetown, 2 p.m.
OUTDOOR TRACK: Division 4 Championships, 9:30 a.m.
SOFTBALL: Newburyport vs. TBD (North Andover Tournament)
Having a good left-handed pitcher in your rotation can mean the difference between a good season and a great one. Case in point, last year's Newburyport team was able to ride the two-man rotation of Brett Fontaine and lefty Ryan O'Connor all the way to a state championship.
