Pioneer League receives $100,000 donation

As part of its 50th-year celebration, the Pioneer League held a banquet last month to honor past presidents. Long-time Pioneer League volunteer and executive board member Mike Barry and his wife, Nancy, donated $100,000 to the renovation project, which will begin at Pioneer Park this summer. The Barrys issued a challenge to the community to match that sum. If an equal amount is raised, the Barrys will donate an additional $100,000.

Lisa Reid from the Newburyport Parks Commission presented Pioneer League president Bob Horne with a $10,000 grant from the Mayor Morrill Foundation. The grant is earmarked for the park renovations being done under the direction of Mike Doyle.

Cathy Lawler and Tom Siemasko planned and organized the event, which included past memorabilia from all 50 years. The evening included the telling of many stories from past members. Past president Gerry Savitkas, while unable to attend, sent a letter that was read to honor the memory of Jack Murray, who died days before the banquet.
