Running

The Santa's Toy Trot 2-Mile, 4-Mile, and 6-Mile Road Race will be held on Dec. 14 at the Sweetsir School in Merrimac. Register with a toy. Proceeds to benefit Toys for Tots. Santa's Elves half-mile fun run for kids starts at 1 p.m. The adult races start at 1:15 p.m. For more information, go to www.runthecircle.com.

Youth Basketball

Newburyport boys basketball coach Tom L'Italien and athletic director John Daileanes will be conducting a series of boys basketball clinics for grades 2-8 on Sundays starting on Dec. 7 through Feb. 1. Grades 2-4 will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nock Middle School, and grades 5-8 will be from 1-2:30 p.m. at Newburyport High. Soccer

West Newbury Youth Soccer League is holding registration for the spring U10 MVP soccer season. All West Newbury boys and girls born between Aug. 1, 1998, and July 31, 2000, are eligible to play. Registration forms can be submitted through the mail during the month of November. Registrations are requested by Dec. 15, 2008, and are available at www.wnyl.org. Baseball

DB's Baseball & Softball Instructional Academy will host "Instruction from Pros" with UMass Amherst assistant coach, two-time All-American, and Olympian Jessica Merchant. Coach Merchant will be hosting fielding and hitting softball clinics on Dec. 7, 14 and 20 with two sessions beginning at 12:30 and 1:30 each day. The cost is $40 per visit or $100 for all three sessions. Limit to 12 players per session. Contact Dave Bettencourt at 978-687-2400 to sign up or for more information.

Matt Antonelli of the San Diego Padres will conduct a three-day baseball clinic at Strike One on Route North 1 in Danvers, Dec. 29-31. The clinic will be held 12:30-3 p.m. on Dec. 29, and 9:30 a.m. to noon on Dec. 30 and 31. Hitting, fielding and fundamentals will be stressed. The clinic is open to players age 8 and up, and the cost is $150. Call 978-535-4403 to reserve a spot. There will be an autograph session and raffle following the clinic on Wednesday.

Learn to Skate

Newburyport Youth Hockey League's Learn to Skate Program is continuing to register children (ages 3 -9) at 9:30 on Sundays for their skating class, which runs from 10 to 10:50 a.m. The cost is $125 for approximately 20 weeks. Any questions, call Dick Tierney at 978-465-0128.

The Graf Rink is also accepting applications for its Tiny Tots programs. Classes run on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday during the day, evening and on weekends.
