---- — RED SOX 12, RAYS 2

Star of the Game: Jon Lester earned the victory, going 7.2 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits (two solo homers) and three walks while striking out seven.

Second Star: Shane Victorino went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a stolen base in Boston’s 14-hit attack.

Rays Defense: Tampa Bay made the second fewest errors in the major leagues this year — and while the Rays didn’t make any yesterday, they had four miscues in the fourth inning that allowed Boston to score five runs. The biggest was when Wil Myers missed a David Ortiz fly to right. It bounced into the bullpen for a ground-rule double.

Myers Play: Wil Myers said his fourth-inning miscue happened because he saw center fielder Desmond Jennings out of the corner of his eye and decided to back off thinking Jennings would catch it. There was speculation that someone in the Red Sox bullpen had yelled “I’ve got it” causing Myers to back off. But Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow said that was not the case. Myers also put that theory to rest.

Heads-up Running: Jonny Gomes (1 for 4 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs) showed some heads-up base-running by scoring from second base on a Stephen Drew infield single in the fourth. It gave Boston a 3-2 lead.

Game 2: Tampa Bay LHP David Price (10-8, 3.33) opposes Boston RHP John Lackey (10-13, 3.52) today at 5:37 p.m. at Fenway Park. The game is on TBS
