The senior captain lifted Amesbury (1-3) to its first victory of the season with a huge performance on both sides of the ball against Hamilton-Wenham Friday night. With the score tied 13-13 late in the fourth quarter, Cullen intercepted Hamilton-Wenham quarterback Jack Clay and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown, sealing the 20-13 victory for his team. On offense, Cullen also had 16 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown and two receptions for 33 yards.
The junior helped get Triton (3-1) back on track in a 35-6 victory over Cape Ann League Large rival Saugus. Gilbert led the Vikings with 13 tackles — three of which came behind the line of scrimmage. The Triton defense held Saugus to a season-low six points, showing resilience after the Week 3 loss to Pentucket. Gilbert led the Vikings with nine solo tackles and four assists. Triton coach Pat Sheehan cited Gilbert’s play as a big reason for his team’s victory.
The junior seemed to make every big play on the defensive side of the ball for Pentucket Friday in a 14-7 victory over Newburyport. The biggest play came early in the fourth quarter, when Richard recovered a botched Newburyport snap on a punt attempt, giving his offense the ball on the Newburyport 25-yard line. Four plays later, Pentucket went ahead for good 14-7. Richard also had two sacks, both of which ruined Newburyport’s offensive series and forced punts.
