Milton Academy snaps Govs’ streak

The Governor’s Academy football team lost for the first time since 2010, a string of 23 games, Saturday afternoon at Milton Academy. The Govs fell to the Mustangs 35-14 in a battle of undefeated Independent School League teams. Milton Academy never trailed in the game. The Governors ran for less than 3 yards a carry (133 yards on 45 attempts) and only added 115 yards through the air. Their three turnovers led to 14 Milton points.

Clancy’s second-half surge

Trailing by seven at the intermission, the Merrimack College football team exploded for 27 points over the final 30 minutes yesterday and survived a late scare from visiting Bentley. The result was a satisfying 40-34 in front of over 3,000 fans on homecoming at Martone-Mejail Field. That lifted the Warriors to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the NE-10.

Newburyport High alumnus Joe Clancy, the senior quarterback at Merrimack, completed 29 of 45 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. Clancy, who already holds the all-time school record in completions and touchdowns, is now 120 yards away from breaking the school record for passing yards (8,559). Clancy has only started the last two seasons.
