Newburyport's Carleo wins CAL Championships

Newburyport Daily News

---- — Newburyport junior Nick Carleo cruised to a first-place finish in the Cape Ann League Championships Saturday at Bradley Palmer State Park, capping a year of dominance in the league.

Carleo finished first in 15:32, beating second-place finisher Harrison Kent of Hamilton-Wenham by 26 seconds.

As a team, Newburyport placed fourth — a bit of a surprise after the Clippers went undefeated in the regular season. Newburyport was without its No. 2 runner Chris Orlando, who has been diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Masconomet won the boys team meet with a score of 51 for its top five runners. The Chieftains were followed by Hamilton-Wenham (63) and Manchester Essex (65). Newburyport finished with 73.

Pentucket’s Alex Demeule placed seventh with a time of 16:35. Joe Molvar also placed in the top 10 — ninth, actually — in 16:38.

Pentucket placed fifth, Amesbury sixth and Triton eighth.

In the girls meet, Triton placed fourth with a score of 124, behind champion Hamilton-Wenham (37), Manchester Essex (77) and Masconomet (95).

Newburyport (137) was fifth, Amesbury (159) seventh and Pentucket (214) ninth.

Triton’s Liz Willmonton placed sixth in 19:14. Amesbury’s Julia Shorter was seventh in 19:17.
