Red Sox World Series trophy visits Statehouse

BOSTON (AP) — State employees lined up yesterday to have their pictures taken with the Boston Red Sox World Series championship trophy as it made a stop at the Massachusetts Statehouse.

A smiling Gov. Deval Patrick, wearing a Red Sox cap, got first crack and posed for photographers next to the trophy in the Governor’s Council chambers. The trophy, the third the team has won since 2004, later moved down the hall to the state Senate chambers.

The team capped a stunning turnaround from its last-place finish a year ago by beating the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, with the clinching Game 6 victory coming at Fenway Park last week.

The trophy was accompanied to the Statehouse by a couple of team officials, but no players attended.

A huge banner celebrating the championship hung from the facade of the historic state capital for several days after the end of the World Series.

The trophy has also made several other visits, including to the TD Garden, where the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins play, and on Sunday, several players accompanied the trophy to Gillette Stadium for the New England Patriots game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The team is expected to be honored at the White House later.

Beth Krudys, senior manager of Fenway Affairs, said the trophy’s permanent home will be at the team’s Fenway Park offices, next to the 2004 and 2007 World Series trophies.
