BYFIELD — There is no doubt that Masconomet's 4-3 record, the same as the team the Chieftains beat 28-0 last night the Triton Vikings, is quite misleading.
Playing a brutal non-conference schedule that included the likes of Division 1 St. John's Prep and reigning Division 2A Super Bowl Champs Gloucester, Masconomet is now 2-0 in the CAL Large having won those two games by a combined score of 70-15.
With a team that was outweighed by close to 20-25 pounds a man on the front line, according to Triton coach Jim O'Leary, the Vikings' gameplan was to throw the kitchen sink at their Chieftain opponents offering as many different looks from the playbook as possible and trying to make plays.
"I thought over the course of the game we were going to have to make big plays, fourth-and-1s, and we practiced that all week," said O'Leary after his team's hard fought loss. "If you kick the ball to a team like that what is it going to do, we have got to make a play on fourth-and-one."
On the first drive of the game, Triton to set that tone faced with a fourth-and-1 from the Vikes own 41-yard line after grinding out two first downs previously. Giving the ball to the Vikes stud running back to date Brendan O'Neil, the junior could not pick up the first down falling inches short on the measurement to turn the ball over on downs.
Five plays laster, Masconomet quarterback Chris Splinter faked a handoff and sprinted out to the left side untouched walking the ball in the end zone from 15 yard for the game's opening score, 7-0.
After the Vikes stalled on their next drive and traded interceptions on trick plays by both teams to start the second quarter, Evan Bunker showed why he may be the premier back in the league. Taking a handoff from his own 42, Bunker went up the middle and then darted out right running away from the Vikings secondary for a 58-yard score, 14-0.
To show just how potent they could be, the Chieftains got a chance to execute their two minute offense. Getting the ball with 1:48 to go on their own 45, Splinter and Bunker worked their magic, and four plays later they were into the end zone again on a 9-yard pass from Splinter to Damien Bandereck, 21-0 at half.
"What's so great about those guys, not only are they smart and can see the field so well, they've got that athletic ability," said O'Leary referring to Splinter and Bunker. "They can run like no tomorrow. Our players can keep them in the box, but once they get in space they're so much faster than our guys."
Bunker punctuated the win with a 10-yard final score on the opening drive of the third quarter, but overall coach O'Leary was quite pleased with the way his team performed in the biggest test of the year.
"You know what I told these guys that we are a good football team this year at 4-3," O'Leary said. "At 4-3 with four games to play we could finish 8-3. These guys play hard the whole game. That's why I think we are going to be close to these guys (Masconomet), and I think by the end of the year we will be as good as they are."
