NEWBURYPORT – A reception for artist Mary Taggart is scheduled for April 4 at the recently expanded Under the Sea Gallery at Nauti Pearl, 18 State St.

This event kicks off Newburyport’s First Thursdays, when local residents are invited to shop, dine and stay late in the city’s downtown on the first Thursday of each month.

Taggart, a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and the founder of TaggArt Studio, offers art instruction to children and adults.

Taggart considers herself a perceptual realist, interpreting the world through color and shape, according to a press release.

She was inspired and taught by Catherine Kehoe, George Nick, Kathleen Jacobs and Amy Mahnick. Taggart’s collection represents the three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface in a personal and energetic way.

Taggart said she has always been drawn to the quiet beauty of the region and is struck by the vastness of the Great Marsh, the sparkling water and subtle nuance of color, providing inspiration in her latest featured portfolio.
